1 Jesus Challenges the Tradition of the Elders Mark 7:1-23

Then some Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,Mark 7:1 2 “Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat.” ^{▼▼Lit. eat bread}Mark 7:5; Col 2:8

but their hearts are far from me.

12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you realize that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be pulled up by the roots.John 15:2; 1Cor 3:12 14 Leave them alone. He} said, “Are you still so ignorant?Matt 16:9; Mark 7:18 17 Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and then is expelled as waste?1Cor 6:13 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is those things that make a person unclean.James 3:6 19 For it is out of the heart that evil thoughts come, as well as murder, adultery, sexual immorality, stealing, false testimony, and slander. ^{▼▼Or blasphemy}Gen 6:5; 9:21; Prov 6:14; Jer 17:9; Mark 7:21 20 These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands doesn't make a person unclean.”
